What Is the Marine Transportation Course?

The Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) is a four-year degree program that prepares students to become licensed Deck Officers and Officers-in-Charge of Navigational Watch (OICNW) on seagoing ships of 500 gross tonnage or more. The program follows the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) convention and is fully aligned with international maritime education standards.

How many years is the BSMT program at VMA Bacolod?

The BSMT program is 4 years total — 3 years of academic study on campus and 1 year of mandatory shipboard training (cadetship) aboard a commercial vessel with a partner shipping company.

Yes. VMA’s BSMT program is recognized by the Commission on Higher Education under GR No. 290, Series of 2000, and is fully accredited by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA). The institution is also ISO 21001:2018 certified.

Applicants must be between 15 and 21 years old upon entry into the BSMT program. Additional requirements include passing the entrance exam, meeting vision and health standards, and submitting all required documents.
